Protection Orders available in the UK
The court issues different types of protection orders to protect victims of abuse. Each order addresses a specific issue or circumstance the applicant might be dealing with.
1. Non-Molestation Order
A non-molestation order prohibits an abuser from using or threatening physical violence, intimidating, harassing, pestering or contacting you. This order will also prevent an abuser from instructing or encouraging others to do any of those actions.
2. Occupation Order
An occupation order can be issued if you’re a victim of domestic abuse and the abuser lives with you or is in a relationship with you. The order outlines who can live in the family home or enter the surrounding area. The court can issue protection orders to accommodate the unique facts of the case.
3. Forced Marriage Protection Order
A forced marriage protection order can get issued when you or someone else gets threatened with a forced marriage. You may apply for an emergency order for protection without the person you are making the order against being involved in the application proceeds. A court can give an order to protect you from a forced marriage.
4. Protection from Harassment Order
The court can order to protect you from someone who behaves in a way which makes you feel distressed, humiliated or threatened.
Examples of harassment include:
- unwanted phone calls, letters, emails or visits
- cyberbullying and threats
- stalking
- verbal abuse and threats
- smashing windows or using dogs to frighten you.
The person who harasses can be someone you know, like a neighbour or community member or it might be a stranger – for example, like a person you met at the market.
You can seek an order of protection for you (and your family) from harassment.
